Here is a sneaky peek at my new artwork titled ‘Begin Creating or Remain the Same’ for Body and Soul Festival 2014. It consists of a big set of wooden wings that have been created out of recycled wooden pallets and a cube with a star on it that glows when you take a picture with the flash on.
It will be situated in the forest area of the festival. I am really looking forward to seeing the site and installing the work next week. Lets hope the weather keeps up!!
I am hoping that this installation will create a space where you can feel safe, protected and able to engage with something creatively. It can be described as interactive, photographically stimulated artwork – It will be brought to life through the interactions and actions of the viewer.
This is the overall concept for my installation….it grew through the creation –
While making your way through a forest, a bright light catches your eye. You are drawn in, passing through darkness and towards the light. Entering into the woods a large set of wings confronts you. Upon further investigation of the surrounding environment, a geometric shape emerges from the darkness, revealing itself. It looks like a fallen star has landed on the earth. This star is different! It is contained within the structure of a cube. A small dark cube floats within this star, like a void of nothingness. The size, shape and patterns, of this cube are an invitation for interaction. It’s geometric shape and pattern comforts and questions the mind all at once. The different forms within this installation are inspired by an investigation into the connections between art, geometry, science, consciousness and spirituality. It is a space where you can feel protected, secure, creative and empowered.
This installation is centred on Metatron’s cube. Metatron’s cube contains every shape existing in our universe. These shapes are the building blocks of all physical matter, which are known as platonic solids. These three-dimensional shapes appear throughout creation.
In sacred geometry there is an archangel named Metatron. He oversees the flow of energy within Metatron’s cube. The wings in this installation hint towards this belief and also symbolize nature, it’s patterns and structures. They are a symbol of comfort, protection and moving forward and or upwards. The pattern of the star tetrahedron, depicted on the cube is also a powerful symbol for protection which keep demons and unwanted influences at bay. This star tetrahedron is missing inner elements, which in turn frees up an inner black cube/void. This cube questions our perception and plays optical tricks. This void can be viewed as a starting point, nature, god or spirit. A space in which matter can move and form. You are presented with the choice, remain the same or begin creating.
Special thanks to my dad who helped me create and provided me with a support structure.
If you are at the festival and take a picture with my work please send them along to me, I would love to see them. I am on Instagram so hashtag away!! #body&soul2014 #begincreatingorremainthesame #rachelkiernan #woodenwings
I brought the wings into show my art class in EVE Estuary and this was the result –
